Conference Overview

SFM Network research is on the cutting edge of what’s new and innovative in sustainable forest management in Canada. This conference will present the culmination of over 14 years of research effort.

Keynote addresses will be provided by:

a)      Dr. Peter Senge, a world renowned strategist on organizational change and leadership, will discuss the environmental woes facing business and some steps that may lead to a more sustainable world;

b)      Dr. Thomas Homer-Dixon, futurist in social adaptation to complex change, will talk about his latest book, the #1 national bestseller, “The Upside of Down”;

c)      Dr. C.S. (Buzz) Holling, conceptual father of adaptive management and ecological resilience;

d)      Dr. Gwynne Dyer, world famous geopolitical analyst, will address the conference on his new book “Climate Wars”.

Numerous other dignitaries and research scientists plan to attend and provide research showcase presentations that highlight partnerships between researchers, industry and government partnerships. Please see the link below for the conference showcase program. In addition, presentations for the Network’s six State of Knowledge (SoK) research projects will be provided by:

a)        Dr. Vic Adamowicz (University of Alberta) -- natural capital and ecosystem valuation;

b)      Dr. Irena Creed (University of Western Ontario) -- implications for water resources on the forested landbase;

c)   Dr. Mark Johnston (Saskatchewan Research Council) -- forest vulnerability to climate change;

d)      Dr. Ellen Macdonald (University of Alberta) -- ecological implications for altering mixedwood forest composition;

e)        Dr. Yolanda Wiersma (Memorial University of Newfoundland) -- innovations regarding protected areas in SFM; and,

f)        Dr. Stephen Wyatt (UniversitĂ© de Moncton, Campus d’Edmundston) -- who has been reviewing the Canadian experience in harmonizing Aboriginal and industry interests, and the best practices for traditional land use mapping.

On Thursday, April 23, Dr. Peter Duinker (Dalhousie University) will present the research results of four plausible, but widely differing, scenarios of the Network’s Forest Futures project: Goods From The Woods, Peace In The Woods, Turbulence In The Woods and Restoration In The Woods that have been developed to guide the discussions at numerous workshops held across the country over the past 18 months.

Please join us in a national celebration of forest research involving major Canadian and international forest research organizations. Our focus is to present the latest Network funded research, to reflect on the future of forest research in Canada, and to build linkages between researchers, research organizations and users of research results.
