Forest Futures

The Forest Futures Project is a Network-wide initiative aimed at focusing the expertise and experience of the Network’s research, industry, government, Aboriginal and NGO communities on the future of Canadian forest and the societies and economies it supports. The goal of the project is to assist in moving toward a sustainable future for Canada’s forests by enhancing the knowledge available to decision-makers.

The exact future is impossible to predict but it is not so difficult to envision a range of possibilities that might happen. The Forest Futures project uses a structured process to develop scenarios for ‘plausible’ futures and to explore the implications of those scenarios for the many benefits that we receive from forested lands.

Central to the project are a series of national and regional workshops used to identify the drivers of future change, define plausible scenarios and analyze these futures from different perspectives. The process is designed to involve a large number of people from many forest stakeholder groups and to integrate their expertise and insight into the outcomes of the project.

The products of the Forest Futures Project – scenario descriptions, research papers describing drivers, workshop proceedings, analysis documents – will be made available to individuals and organizations to inform decision-making. The overall objective of the Forest Futures project is to produce a set of documents that inform and present the scenarios and analyses that can be used to inform decison-making by industry, governments, and other groups with interest in Canadian forests.  Documents describing the drivers and the scenarios are available here.

Essays

The project solicited essays on the future of Canada's forests, in reaction to the scenarios presented. The best essays are in revision and will be presented in the future.
