Aboriginal Elder Interviews On The Changing Forest Interim Report
Canada’s Aboriginal elders have accumulated a wealth of knowledge about our forests. They have a good sense of what a healthy forest looks like and the role of human beings in maintaining the well-being of Canada’s forests. At the same time, they have seen many changes to Canada’s forests over their lifetimes brought about climate change, logging, mining and other anthropogenic factors. Because of their intimate relationship with the land, they have a good idea of what is needed to maintain the health of the forest, what normal variability in environmental conditions should look like, and what the role of humans is in maintaining the ecological integrity of our forests.
Such wisdom and knowledge of the dynamic baseline conditions of Canada’s forested lands is instrumental to preserving the biological and cultural diversity of our forests. Yet, it is conceivable that, within the next few years -- certainly within the next decade, most of this knowledge and wisdom will be lost forever if no systematic effort is taken to record them. On this basis, the SFM Network Aboriginal Elders Legacy Project was conceived and implemented.
