Guidelines to Authors: Synthesis Report Series

SFM Network Synthesis Reports address specific topics of interest to SFM Network Partners.  These reports synthesize research results from projects conducted through the Network and elsewhere in Canada to assist foresters, planners, biologists and other forest management practitioners in the development of alternative approaches to forest management planning and operational practices.

These reports are written in plain language and provide management implications and recommendations for implementation.  They provide resource managers with new information in a form they can readily use to develop alternative management strategies or confirm that current planning and operational practices are meeting SFM objectives.

A variety of approaches have been used in the development of these documents.  Authors have included research scientists, post-graduate students and consultants.  Somewhat deliberately, no attempt has been made to standardize the content or format of these documents.  Depending on the author and the topic, a report may vary from being a first level, highly scientific synthesis of primary research results to a handbook on implementation recommendations.  There are a variety of products, to meet the varied needs of our many Partners.  Each report is subjected to a review process to help ensure that the report maintains a level of scientific vigor and meets the needs of our Partners.

Synthesis reports are distributed to all SFM Network Partners and are posted on the Network website in English and French.
